Logan Joseph Update

Today we are 36 weeks and 4 days into Carrie's pregnancy with Logan. We headed to the OB for a routine check up yesterday and left four hours later very overwhelmed. It all started that Carrie did not gain weight AND her belly showed no signs of growth over the past week. At this point in the pregnancy the baby grows tremendously and there should be differences in the belly size weekly. So they wanted to do an ultrasound to check the amniotic fluid level and his size. The initial US showed borderline low amniotic fluid and that Logan is measuring four weeks small making him in the 9th percentile. So, we waited to talk to the doctors again and the longer it took, the more we realized they were more than likely consulting with someone about their findings. Then they informed us of their concerns about why he is so small, the most concerning is that the placenta is showing signs of deteriorating. The doctors were on the phone consulting with Duke Perinatalogy. Duke asked for the OB to perform a Biophysical Profile and a Non-Stress Test. The biophysical profile is a 30 minute US test, where they montior fluid levels, fetal movement and fetal "practice" breathing. After that they took Carrie to the another room for a 30 minute Non Stress Test. On this test they monitor fetal heart rate, movements and contractions. Since Logan did not show any signs of distress they let us come home, they had informed us earlier that the worst case scenario was that we we be having Logan right then and there. They called and got us an appointment at Duke Peritnatology for Monday to do a level 2 ultrasound to monitor how well the cord and placenta are functioning. Carrie is to be on bed rest from here until 38 weeks and IF she makes it to 38 weeks Logan will be delivered then. They want him to make it to Monday (37 weeks, what they deem "full term"), but the extra week in utero will give him the best chance possible to be a healthy baby. So, for the mean time we are to keep Carrie on bedrest, monitor fetal movement and call if he becomes less active or if Carrie goes into labor. We need to make it to Monday and then hopefully make it to Thursday when we go back to the OB to get the same tests done again to check on Logan (biophysical profile and Non Stress Test). Then we can make it to 38 weeks. We will do our best to keep the blog updated but are trying to tie up loose ends over the next 10 days or less. Mr. Logan will soon be here!!
